My muse has decided she needs another vacation....hopefully she exhausts her yearly vacation time here pretty quick and I can manage to get a few things done. I haven't been completely unproductive since my last post, just not nearly as productive as I would like to be or as I usually am this time of year. I know last time I posted I promised pictures of some of the wonderful arty things I got for my birthday (over a month ago) , but yeah it hasn't happened!
I have worked on a couple of non-sewing projects since my last post.
One is my re-purposed cabinet door. A friend is totally remodeling her house that was built in the 30's, one of her latest projects was a total gut of her kitchen. My sometimes creative husband asked if he could have a few of the old cupboard doors to use for photo art and then they sat (he has wonderful ideas but not always the best follow through) and I realized one of them was just the right size for a message center for my studio. I have several cork boards that I tack drawings and such to but no real place to jot down reminders other than the margins of my project journal. I decided to strip off the old paint, decoupage the border with fabric scraps and buttons and such and then turn the whole inside into a chalk board. This sound pretty easy right? WRONG!!! Did I mention that these were the same cupboards that were originally installed in the house in the 1930's when it was built.....After an entire day of scrapping paint off a layer at a time (for anyone that knows anything about kitchen fashion I have scrapped away the white, the ecru, and the beige. In some places I have also made it past the goldenrod and the avocado green) I came to 2 conclusions. The first one was that this was going to be a lot harder than I thought and the wood that I found underneath the layer of paint was to pretty to cover up with fabric scraps. I have decided that I will only take the paint off the frame and the top have of the door interior, the bottom half will be cork (that means I only have to sand it down enough for hot glue to stick) and the top half will still be chalk board.
I worked on a second non-sewing piece as well. This one will have to remain hush hush for about another month. My oldest friend and creative cheerleader Mila Bowman at Encourage Creative will be reaching a milestone of not only completing one creative act everyday for 365 days, but also blogging about it on June 15th, because I won't be able to attend the celebration I have created something special to commemorate her accomplishment. After she has received it I will make a point of posting for all to see! (Sorry Mila NO HINTS for you!)
I also completed a 4 piece collection. The customer was happy, but because everything was done by static measurements between 2 states the tops were exactly what she wanted and the bottoms were to small. She assures me she doesn't hold me accountable and has even tried to pay me for the shipping or material costs of a replacement garment. NOT gonna happen, I believe in fixing my mistakes and doing whatever I can to make the best of the situation and keep the client happy all at one time. Now if my pesky muse would settle down so I could get to work!
My Facebook page reached a new milestone since my last post....we have reached 50 likes! It took a little over a year but we've done it and had a fair amount of traffic ever since. I am in the process of finishing up an apron for the winner of my first person so be 50 contest.
I have also been contacted about the possibility of doing another wedding. Thankfully this one is more of a laid back beachy theme and I will only be doing a bridesmaid dress and potential the brides dress, but they have yet to set anything in stone.
I have also taken a few minutes (ok a couple hours) to rearrange all of the Quilted Elephant photo albums by collection. I'm hoping this makes them easier to flip through for those of you that are interested. If anyone is interested let me know. Work has slowed down considerably and I think I'll have a little more studio time than I have and I'd love to have new projects!

Finishing What you Start
Get ready for it the second blog post in less than a week. I must have to much time on my hands or something!
Over the last week or so I have been attempting to clean and organize not only my studio but the space upstairs in the loft that was formerly my studio. The new studio is actually in pretty good shape, but the old space is still kind of a mess. I attribute some of this to the fact that I was at the very beginning of the wedding project when I moved and because that project overwhelmed my creative life for so long I got side tracked from finishing anything else. I have also been working a lot more than normal at my regular job which has meant less studio time, combine that with my Muse's cute little decision to take an unscheduled vacation and I haven't gotten much done.
Last week I actually had a studio day(granted it was cute short by a trip to Michael's and to the fabric store, but that's neither here nor there) and part of my time was spent going through the mess in the loft. I really didn't make much of a dent, but I did make a discovery, I found at least 3 different projects that had been started and then put aside and never finished. From talking to my artist friends I know that this is something that is fairly common for them, they start a project and then abandon it because it's taking a different direction than what they are looking for, but thus is something new for me, I'm usually pretty good at following a project all the way through to the end even if I'm unhappy with the out come, I guess these pieces somehow slipped through the cracks! Over the last week I have made a point of finishing 2 of them and maybe next week I will feel like finishing the others, all one needs is a zipper and a place to wear it, so maybe that one will be next. I'm pretty sure I can find an excuse to wear a cute sundress, or maybe it will go unpublished and become a gift for one of the many upcoming birthdays I have ti start thinking about.
As my weekend comes to an end ( it really wasn't long enough) I'm going to make more of an effort to finish cleaning up the old studio so that it can turned into a more useable space. I received several new art pieces for my birthday earlier this month and I will be displaying them in my next post. I have realized I have some pretty talented friends!

I think I lost my muse
This post should actually be dated about a week and a half ago so about April 4, 2013. I started it on the blogger app on my phone and then my phone went bonkers and I lost my work not to mention a whole bunch of pictures (gotta love modern technology)
As those of you that regularly follow my Facebook page may have noticed Quilted Elephant has been absent from your feeds for close to a month now. This is because my Muse (the little person that lives in the back of my head and helps inspire me to create new designs) seems to have taken a vacation without me. This has happened before, but it rarely lasts this long. All I can chalk it up to is the fact that I spent November and December working on Christmas gifts and then January and February working on wedding stuff and I got a little burnt out. In years past I have always made myself either an Easter dress or a birthday dress (they are usually one in the same since my birthday and Easter are rarely more than a couple weeks apart) this year I bought the material and I sketched a little and I thought about what I wanted and that's as far as I got. In an attempt to inspire myself I played with a new pattern I posted those last time I was here as part of my ''Bag Lady'' collection I tried a couple of new techniques and nothing seemed to work so I closed the door to my studio and walked away. I figured a few days not having to think about it would help well then those few days turned into a few weeks and before I new it almost a month had passed and I had nothing to show for it. No doodles, no new ideas and still no interest in making anything. This is a little scary!
I enlisted the help of a very close friend who is also of a creative nature hoping she could share some wisdom to bring that lazy so and so I call a Muse back from her vacation. She told me to look around for something new and out of the ordinary to try. She advised that even if it seemed a little forced at first stick with it and there was a good bet it would help to jump start my creativity. Mila you my friend are a LIFE SAVER! Several months ago a friend of mine remodeled the kitchen of her home that was originally built in the 1930's, she gutted the kitchen all the way to the studs and replaced everything (yeah I know how does this have anything at all to do with finding my lazy so and so Muse..I'm getting there be patient) including the cabinets. After the kitchen was finished we were over for a BBQ and my hubby noticed the old cupboard doors. They aren't particularly intricate but the struck him as something he could make something out of so he asked if he could have a couple before they threw them out. Of course our friend was more than thrilled to have them out of her side yard and told us to help ourselves. He picked through and found a couple that he could envision as something else, I stood by muttering to myself ''wonderful something else to sit in the garage until he gets around to working with it" and then I saw a door that he had moved to the cast off pile it was smaller than the others maybe 3 feet long and a little over a foot wide and it had some sort of a basket attached to the inside (my friends told us she used it to store gravy packets and the like) bottom. I added that one to his pile and declared that I was going to make something out of it. It sat in the garage untouched for close to 2 months then Mila suggested I go out on limb and try something new. I was pondering what exactly that meant and decided if nothing else I would clean up the kitchen and take out the trash. On my way to thee trash barrel I noticed my door....BOOM!!! inspiration struck! I would strip the old paint that was already cracked and pealing off of it (this was much easier said than done you have NO idea how many coats of paint you can strip off a door that is close to 50 years old if not older) decoupage the frame with buttons and bobbins and fabric scarps and make the inside a chalk board. The little basket could be repainted and the whole thing could hang in my studio as a message center of sorts in an effort to keep myself at least some what organized. Since I started I have made quite a bit of progress but it is really slow going, I figure by Christmas I should be able to share it with everyone! While I didn't get far with that project it gave my Muse the kick in the pants she needed to come back and bring a little inspiration with her.
I have spent some time since then filtering through half finished projects and deciding which ones I actually plan to finish and which are bound for the rag bag. I have been thinking of new ways to better organize my studio and I have even started bugging my photographer friends about doing a spring/summer photo shoot for me. I also have made some changes in my studio. a few weeks ago my hubby rescued a faux butcher block kitchen table from his moms house. The redid their kitchen as well and had replaced it. It isn't quite as long as my old cutting table but it stands about 6" taller and is almost twice as wide....I'm hoping that the new addition will inspire lots of new things.

Updates and Random thoughts
Ok ladies...I know I've been slacking a little (ok a lot) the last couple weeks. I appreciate all of your feed back on my bags. I sent one off as a gift and another got put to good use yesterday and received all sorts of compliments.
This weeks plans include a size large bag with long handles made out of
vinyl sheeting, a birthday dress for a lovely young lady (one of my
adopted nieces, gotta love extended family) and possibly some work on a
motorcycle seat I am recovering for James uncle.
While this weekend was very crazy and because of spending more time at my real job I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to on Friday to get lost in my creative pursuits although that didn't stop me from finding creativity in other ways. My greatest creative accomplishment for the week was helping my closet creative husband re-do all of the straps on our riding saddles. My saddle is synthetic materials and has always had nylon girth straps etc, but some were warn and one was missing (don't ask I dunno either) so we decided to visit one of our favorite places, TEMPE SALES the store where you can buy anything from spray adhesive to marble blocks with detours in between to cowhide, foam in all matter of thicknesses and shapes and all sorts of nylon straps in about 10 different widths in 5 different colors,and get the nylon strapping we needed to replace the worn ones on my saddle. James saddle is mostly leather and even though the straps on his had been cared for the were a little on the worn side as well, so we figured while we're at it we'll replace them all. I know you're all asking how does this lead to something creative. I'm getting to that part...it's creative because we turned 10 yards of bulk nylon strapping (think dog leash but about 13/4" wide) into 2 6ft long cinch straps, 4 22" rear girth straps and 2 20" front cinch strap (this is the one that the cinch is always attached to...the long one is the one you tighten so the saddle doesn't flip over). Sounds simple right? Except that all of these straps have no less than 8 holes in them. This is where the creative part comes in....James punched the holes using a leather punch (they work on nylon too) and the old straps as a template and then I used our wood burning tool to seal the ends of each strap so they wouldn't fray and to seal the inside of each hole (melting the nylon makes the holes stronger and less likely to tear out). We were pretty pleased with our work, the real test will be on Saturday when we saddle up with my saddle for the first time to see if everything holds the way it should (if not I'll let you know how bad the bruises are in my next post).
At the beginning of this post I mentioned making a birthday dress for my niece (adopted but mine just the same). Her dress like several others I have in the works are going to be the start of my spring/summer collection. I actually already have my first spring/summer order although I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm a total loser because I've been promising her pictures for 2 weeks and they haven't happened yet. I'm a slacker what can I say. I also have had a couple other requests but no solid orders yet so we'll have to see what actually materializes!

Ok so I didn't wait a whole month....
Good Morning all! For those of you that are loyal followers you know I'm not real good at remembering to update my blog on what is anywhere near a regular basis. The thought crosses my mind often but usually get pushed aside by another task, or something shiny or the fact that I'm actually driving when I think about it and have realized that trying to update right then even using the mobile app probably isn't the very best idea, but I'm here now and I have LOTS to share!
First and foremost, for those of you that have been following the wedding dress saga, last weekend was W day. Brandy got married a week ago Saturday in her beautiful Quilted Elephant dress. She was joined by her daughter Adrianna and our niece Odessa both wearing Quilted Elephant designed flower girl dresses. There will be pictures coming soon, but the photography team took close to 500 pictures that afternoon and I am still waiting for my copies to add to the website, the Facebook page and of course this blog. I also created a couple of other looks by request for attendees of the wedding. All and all there were a total of 6 Quilted Elephant designs in attendance.
I have also started my Spring/ Summer collection. Mostly simple wrap dresses, tiered peasant skirts and a sundress or 2, but it is only February (for at least a few more days) and until the weather makes up it's mind completely I won't be able to wear them much anyway.
I have also received a couple of orders stemming from things that were posted during the wedding craziness. If you have requested something PLEASE be patient with me. The last couple weeks have been really hectic and due to that fact I am just a little bit behind on a couple of my projects. I will do my best to make sure that everyone get what they requested as soon as possible.
My final thought for the day is simple...PLEASE SEND PICTURES!!! If you received a Quilted Elephant gift during the holiday season PLEASE share. I don't have form shots of many of the holiday gifts due tot he fact I didn't want to post them on accident and give away the surprise. Studio Updates.....part 3 (I think)
Ok ok ok.......I have been asked by a couple of people for pictures of the new studio and I do have a few to share, but you all have to understand I have been in it less than a month and during that month I completed a wedding gown and 2 flower girl dresses. My reason for stressing this is because it's a mess and there are some definite signs of disorganization. I am working to overcome the mess and the disorganization but it's slow going because the sun is shining and my music is on LOUD (thank you Melissa B for the Grammy mix) and my creative juices are flowing. I'm excited to finish the wedding dresses, the final fittings are this weekend and honestly I'm glad to be done with project. The stress of trying to keep the material clean and pretty and dog hair free and having to clean my machine 3 times more often than normal is making me NUTS!
Ok now it's time for pictures! Welcome to my studio the pictures basically pan from left to right around the room. The picture to the right is my fabric storage unit. Currently it is also home to my heavy steam iron, my extra sewing machine and a shoe box full of patterns that need to magically find some sort of organization. Above the dresser you can see one of my favorite pieces of art. A beautiful collage piece given to me by Mila Bowman. I suggest checking out her blog EncourageCreative.com. It follows her one a journey of creative discovery and a challange to herself to do at least one creative thing everyday for 365 days.
The picture to the left shows you part of why I enjoy working in this room so much. It has a HUGE picture window. I enjoy starring out the window while I work and I love the soft light that it provides to the space.The left of the picture is mu trusty ironing board that also does double duty as pin cushion and computer table and to the right it my cutting table. Someday my cutting table will transform into a counter height surface that has lots of room to spread out, but for the time being this seems to be working pretty well, especially with the addition of the drawers underneath. That can be pulled out to hold scissors and pins as well as additional pattern pieces during the cutting process. The wall over my cutting table is VERY bare, but I have been toying with the idea of framing some fo my sketches in rimless acrylic frames and hanging them up for something interesting to look at. Ms. Bowman has also promised me a new piece of art (which she tells me will be shipped this weekend) and I hope to use it as a focal point in thise giant blank space!
This is my work station. It gets great natural light and when I get frustrated I can stare out the window and watch the world go by for just a little while. I found the box with drawers at a yard sale for $1 a couple of years ago and it has become a great place to store thread and elastic and all the other things that it helps to have close at hand. You may also notice the shiny thing hanging on the wall...yep you guessed it, that shiny thing is an over the door shoe storage thingy that I have tacked to the wall. It come's handing from holding everything from extra scissors to spools of ribbon and even beads and such for embellishments.
To the left of my work station is Stella my dress form. She has on a new dress and has asked not to have her picture shared today. Eventually I would like to put in a full length mirror as well so that my clients can get a good view of how they look. I also have tailors blocks for clients to stand on in the even they are trying on a long dress and forgot their shoes.

Ok now it's time for pictures! Welcome to my studio the pictures basically pan from left to right around the room. The picture to the right is my fabric storage unit. Currently it is also home to my heavy steam iron, my extra sewing machine and a shoe box full of patterns that need to magically find some sort of organization. Above the dresser you can see one of my favorite pieces of art. A beautiful collage piece given to me by Mila Bowman. I suggest checking out her blog EncourageCreative.com. It follows her one a journey of creative discovery and a challange to herself to do at least one creative thing everyday for 365 days.
This is my work station. It gets great natural light and when I get frustrated I can stare out the window and watch the world go by for just a little while. I found the box with drawers at a yard sale for $1 a couple of years ago and it has become a great place to store thread and elastic and all the other things that it helps to have close at hand. You may also notice the shiny thing hanging on the wall...yep you guessed it, that shiny thing is an over the door shoe storage thingy that I have tacked to the wall. It come's handing from holding everything from extra scissors to spools of ribbon and even beads and such for embellishments.
To the left of my work station is Stella my dress form. She has on a new dress and has asked not to have her picture shared today. Eventually I would like to put in a full length mirror as well so that my clients can get a good view of how they look. 3 dresses and a rainy weekend
I'm back! This is getting to be kind of a regular thing, but don't worry once summer starts to happen that will end I can almost guarantee it!
This week has been a strange one for me. On Monday I went all out...I spent the better part of my day working on the dresses for Brandy's wedding. By the way that number went from 2 to 3 last weekend when I volunteered to make my nieces flower girl dress as well. The pattern for hers is really simple and really cute so it's not really that much more work. The main attraction Brandy's dress is just about finished, I have to install the zipper (yuck), hem the bottom and attach the criss-cross strappy things in the back (they have always been part of the design but I've become rather accustomed to seeing the dress as more of a halter while I've been working on it. Oh well to late to make that major of a design change now should have thought of it a month ago). All total I probably have a couple of hours left on her dress. Her daughter Adrianna's dress is done except for a hem and any last minute adjustments that I'll need to take care of next week when she comes for the final fitting. My nieces dress is all the way cut out and probably about half-way put together, again maybe and hour or two and it's done, but I've lost my drive to get them done. I'm not sure what the issue is other than my real job has been a little crazier than usual this week and I haven't been feeling 100% this week but I really need to get my self in gear and get these done.
While I have lost the drive to finish the wedding dresses I have not lost my inspiration. I got a couple new patterns today and some really great spring material and can't wait to get started on my spring/Summer collections, but first I have to get those darn wedding dresses done!
I was hoping this weekend would turn out to be a great time to work since it's been raining here since sometime last night and it's foretasted to keep raining until sometime early next week, but with gloomy skies comes a gloomy attitude and little to no interest in pretty things. Hopefully after a yummy dinner and a good nights sleep tomorrow I will actually feel like working (or I'll have to make myself because next Friday is final fittings). Wish me luck and keep watching for new pictures!
